Designed by Sori Yanagi in 1954, the Butterfly Stool has an unusual, fluid form made possible by utilizing the bent plywood technique created by Charles and Ray Eames. Unusual too is its construction: two identical pieces connected by a brass rod. The resulting shape is evocative of torii (gates) to Shinto shrines, or a butterfly's wings. The Vitra Miniature Butterfly Stool presents the same graceful curves at 1/6th the size of the original.
